CVC Words Bingo

A bingo pack with 40 CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words, eight for each short vowel: a, e, i, o, and u. Because every vowel is on every card, students have to listen for the vowel sound, not just the first letter, which makes this the best check that they can tell the short vowels apart. CVC decoding is the foundation of early phonics, so the pack works for whole-class blending practice, small-group rotations, or a quick warm-up before guided reading.

CVC words in this pack

All 40 words on the calling sheet, grouped by short vowel. Each student card shows 24 of them in a random order, so no two cards are alike.

How to play CVC bingo

  1. Print the PDF. Give each student one card and some markers: counters, crayons, or dry beans all work.
  2. Call a word from the teacher calling sheet. Say it slowly, sound by sound (/c/ /a/ /t/), then say the whole word.
  3. Students repeat the sounds, blend the word, and look for it on their card. Check the word off on your calling sheet.
  4. The first student with five in a row (across, down, or diagonal) calls "Bingo!" and reads their five words back to the class.
  5. For a longer game, play blackout: the winner is the first student to cover every square.

Ways to adapt the game

  1. New to CVC words? Start with one short vowel at a time using the short a, e, i, o, and u packs, then come back to this mixed pack.
  2. Hold up a picture instead of saying the word, and have students segment and spell it before searching their card.
  3. Have the winning student use each of their five words in a sentence.
